Sigma Level (DPMO) Calculator
Convert your defect data into defects per million (DPMO) and a sigma level.
6σ = 3.4 DPMO. Industry average is often 3–4σ.
Values are calculated only in your browser; no data is stored.
About this metric
What is it?
Converting your defect data into defects per million opportunities (DPMO) and a sigma level — process quality maturity.
How is it calculated?
DPMO = defects / (units × opportunities) × 1,000,000; sigma is derived from yield via the normal distribution (with the 1.5σ shift).
How to interpret it?
6σ = 3.4 DPMO; industry average is 3–4σ. Each sigma level reduces defects roughly tenfold.
How to improve it?
Use DMAIC to find root cause and prevent defects; focus on the highest-defect opportunity.
