OEE: What Is Overall Equipment Effectiveness and How to Calculate It
The gold standard for measuring a machine's true performance: Availability × Performance × Quality.
What is OEE?
OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) shows, in a single percentage, how effectively a machine uses its planned production time: OEE = Availability × Performance × Quality. World-class is typically 85%.
The three components
- Availability — downtime losses (breakdowns, setup)
- Performance — speed losses (slow cycles, minor stops)
- Quality — defect losses (scrap, rework)
How to improve it
First measure the losses with data (MES), then target the biggest one: TPM for breakdowns, SMED for setup, SPC and FMEA for quality. Small, continuous gains raise OEE for good.
